Newcastle United close in on first summer signing after talks held with Ewen Jaouen
Newcastle United have held discussions with both Reims and the representatives of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen in recent days.
Chronicle Live understands that Jaouen's agency is listening to Newcastle's pitch but at this stage there is no agreement, despite reports in France that he is ready to sign. What the 20-year-old is keen to establish is what the sporting project at United looks like long-term and where he fits into those plans.
But there is hope from both sides that things could move in the right direction.
Having only signed a deal until 2029 with Reims back in April, ensuring the next step is the right one for the 6ft 6in star is deemed absolutely vital. And there also remains interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Newcastle are looking for a younger keeper but will also be the in market for a new number 1 too. James Trafford would be the dream signing for many supporters and Newcastle have a long-term interest in the Man City star.
Jaouen made 35 appearances last season in Ligue 2 for Reims, conceding 35 goals and having 15 clean sheets. Newcastle still have a decision to make on Aaron Ramsdale who spent the season on loan from Southampton while Nick Pope has interest from Leeds United.
Asked if he will sign Ramsdale, Howe said: "I've really enjoyed working with Aaron again. I think he's an unbelievable lad.
"Every time that I've worked with him, I've always had a great feeling about his personality and what he brings to the group - very, very positive guy.
"He's actually become part of the squad so quickly and a really positive part of the squad. Very good off the pitch, very good in supporting the goalkeeper, who's playing and he's played a lot of games this year.
"I think he'd be really pleased with his return in terms of minutes and what he's given the team.
"I think we've seen a big improvement from the moment that he came to his level, his training performances, his game performances. I think have been really strong."
Head coach Eddie Howe likes Jaouen, but he is one of a number of young goalkeepers that the club are looking at. Although, the fact that Newcastle have wasted no time advancing a deal shows that the Magpies are eager to make no mistakes this summer.
