The race for governor is a wide-open contest, with term limits preventing Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, from running for re-election.
Republicans typically struggle to win statewide races in California, but a large group of Democrats split the state’s liberal voters in early polling, leaving two Republicans near the top of many polls. One of the Republicans, Steve Hilton, won the endorsement of President Trump, boosting his support and reducing the chance of two Republicans appearing on the ballot in November.
Among the leading Democratic candidates are Xavier Becerra, a former secretary of health and human services, and Tom Steyer, a billionaire philanthropist. Representative Eric Swalwell was one of the leading Democrats before he suspended his campaign following allegations of sexual assault.
