The retirement of longtime Senator Richard J. Durbin has opened a safe Democratic seat in a state where Republicans have not won a statewide election in a decade. Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, with the backing of Gov. JB Pritzker and the state’s political machine, beat Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi in the Democratic primary and will face Don Tracy, a former chair of the Illinois Republican party, in the general election.
